A storage unit in NYC typically costs $60–$200 a month for a small or medium unit, and $225–$500 a month for a standard 10×10 in Manhattan. Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx run cheaper, and Staten Island is the least expensive borough. What you actually pay each month also depends on fees: many facilities add an admin charge, a required insurance plan, or an introductory rate that rises after a few months.

This guide breaks down NYC storage prices by unit size and borough, shows what Urban Stash charges today, and explains how to compare the real monthly cost, not just the advertised rate.

NYC storage prices at a glance

  • Small unit (5×5 or smaller): about $60–$180/month
  • Standard 10×10: about $150–$500/month, depending on borough
  • Most expensive borough: Manhattan ($225–$500 for a 10×10)
  • Least expensive borough: Staten Island ($100–$130 for a 10×10)
  • Urban Stash: small units from $50/month in Williamsburg and $80/month in the East Village, month-to-month, no deposit

How much does a storage unit cost in NYC by size?

Unit size is the biggest driver of price after location. These are typical 2026 monthly ranges across NYC for traditional self-storage, before promotions and fees. The low end reflects outer-borough facilities; the high end reflects Manhattan.

  • 5×5 (25 sq ft): $60–$180/month. Fits boxes, seasonal clothes, suitcases, a bike.
  • 5×10 (50 sq ft): $100–$275/month. Fits studio overflow, a mattress, a few furniture pieces.
  • 10×10 (100 sq ft): $150–$500/month. Fits the contents of a one-bedroom apartment.
  • 10×15 (150 sq ft): $250–$650/month. Fits a two-bedroom apartment.
  • 10×20 (200 sq ft): $300–$800/month. Fits a larger home or business inventory.

Not sure which size you need? Most NYC renters overestimate. Our storage size guide matches unit sizes to what people actually store.

NYC storage prices by borough

NYC storage prices are not uniform across the five boroughs. Here is what a standard 10×10 typically costs in each.

  • Manhattan: $225–$500/month for a 10×10. The priciest market. Non-climate-controlled units average around $400/month. Neighborhood micro-storage brings small units in well under $100.
  • Brooklyn: $150–$350/month for a 10×10. Cheaper than Manhattan overall, but Williamsburg, DUMBO and Park Slope are catching up.
  • Queens: $150–$225/month for a 10×10. Long Island City and Astoria trend toward Manhattan pricing; Jamaica and Flushing are lower.
  • The Bronx: $100–$175/month for a 10×10. Close to Manhattan without Manhattan pricing.
  • Staten Island: $100–$130/month for a 10×10. The lowest rates in the city, with the longest trip for most Manhattan and Brooklyn renters.

What is the real monthly cost of a storage unit?

The advertised rate is rarely the full price. Before you compare two facilities, add up everything you will pay in the first three months:

  • Intro rate vs. regular rate. Many facilities discount the first month or two, then raise the rent. Ask what month four will cost.
  • Admin or move-in fees. A one-time charge some facilities add at signup.
  • Insurance or protection plan. Usually required. Find out the monthly cost and what it covers.
  • Security deposit. Some facilities hold one; others, including Urban Stash, do not.
  • Getting there. A truck rental, a cab or a lost Saturday is part of the price of a far-away facility, and you pay it again every time you need something.

A unit that is $30 cheaper on paper can cost more over a year once fees and trips are counted.

Is price per square foot the right way to compare storage?

Only if you need the space. Smaller units almost always cost more per square foot, but less in total. A $300 10×10 works out to about $3 per square foot, while a small Manhattan unit can run closer to $8 per square foot. If your seasonal clothes, suitcases and a few boxes fit in a small unit, paying $50–$80 a month beats paying $300 for empty space. Size for what you are storing, not for the best per-foot rate.

What drives NYC storage prices?

Location and neighborhood density

Storage facilities pay New York rents for every square foot they occupy, and that cost passes through to renters. A unit in the East Village or SoHo costs more than the same unit in the South Bronx or Staten Island, and prices can swing block to block within a borough.

Climate control

Climate-controlled units keep temperature and humidity stable year-round, which matters for wood furniture, electronics, artwork and musical instruments. Expect a 20–40% premium over standard units; in Manhattan, climate control can nearly double a base rate.

Access

Facilities embedded in a neighborhood, with extended or 24/7 access, charge for that convenience. Drive-up units in warehouse-style facilities can be cheaper, but they trade location for logistics.

Contract length

Month-to-month is the norm in NYC. Some facilities discount six- or twelve-month prepayment, but a long commitment limits your options if your plans change.

Which type of storage is cheapest in NYC?

There are three storage models in NYC, each with a different cost structure.

  • Traditional self-storage: Rent a unit at a warehouse-style facility, usually in an outer borough or industrial area, and transport your things yourself. Typical cost: $100–$400/month by size and borough. Best for: large volumes, long-term storage, people with a car.
  • Full-service storage: A company picks up your items, stores them off-site and delivers them on request. You never visit the facility. Typical cost: $50–$150/month for a few bins, plus delivery and retrieval fees. Best for: things you rarely need to see.
  • Neighborhood micro-storage (like Urban Stash): Smaller units inside your neighborhood that you walk or bike to and open with your phone. Typical cost: from $50/month for small units at Urban Stash. Best for: apartment dwellers who need frequent, easy access.

For the lowest sticker price, an outer-borough warehouse usually wins. For the lowest total cost when you need regular access and do not own a car, a nearby unit often wins. More on that tradeoff in our guide to finding storage in NYC without a car.

How to pay less for storage in NYC

  • Decide how often you need access. If you need something once a quarter, a far-away facility may make sense. If you need it weekly, cab rides and lost time add up fast.
  • Right-size your unit. You probably do not need a 10×10 for seasonal clothes and a few boxes. Start small and size up if you need to.
  • Ask for the month-four price. Compare the regular rate, not the promo.
  • Count every fee. Admin fees, deposits and insurance can add more than the rent difference between two facilities.
  • Stay month-to-month unless a prepay discount is large and your plans are fixed.
  • Book online. Facilities that let you reserve and move in online, including Urban Stash, skip the office visit entirely.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a storage unit cost per month in NYC?

Most NYC storage units cost between $60 and $500 a month. Small units start around $50–$80 in neighborhood facilities, while a standard 10×10 runs $150–$350 in Brooklyn and $225–$500 in Manhattan. Fees, insurance and promotional pricing change the total, so compare the full monthly cost.

How much is storage in Manhattan?

A 10×10 storage unit in Manhattan typically costs $225–$500 a month at a traditional facility. Smaller neighborhood units cost far less in total; Urban Stash's East Village small units start at $80 a month.

Is storage cheaper in Brooklyn than in Manhattan?

Usually, yes. A 10×10 in central Brooklyn averages $150–$350 a month versus $225–$500 in Manhattan, though Williamsburg and DUMBO are closing the gap. Urban Stash's Williamsburg small units start at $50 a month.

What is the cheapest storage option in NYC?

The lowest rates are usually at outer-borough facilities in the Bronx or Staten Island, or through peer-to-peer platforms that rent space in people's homes. If you need to get to your things often, a small neighborhood unit can cost less overall once travel time and fees are counted.

Do NYC storage facilities require a deposit?

Some do. Urban Stash does not charge a security deposit; your prorated first month and Protection Plan are all you pay at booking.

Do NYC storage facilities require long-term contracts?

Most offer month-to-month rentals. Urban Stash rentals are month-to-month with a one-month minimum, and you can cancel anytime before the 1st to stop the next month's charge.

Can I access my storage unit anytime?

It depends on the facility; many traditional facilities have set gate hours. Urban Stash units are accessible 24/7 at both the East Village and Williamsburg locations, with entry by phone.

What size storage unit do I need for an NYC apartment?

A small unit handles seasonal clothes, suitcases and boxes. A medium unit fits apartment overflow such as a bike, a dresser or a few furniture pieces. A large unit covers a bedroom set or a move. Exact dimensions are listed for every unit before booking.

Why is storage so expensive in NYC?

Storage facilities pay some of the highest commercial rents in the country, and demand is high because apartments are small. Smaller units inside neighborhoods are designed to keep the monthly total low by renting only the space you need.
